Marshall Eriksen
Marshall Eriksen has been Ted Mosby's best friend since 1998, when the two met at Wesleyan University as undergraduates. He is currently married to the love of his life and fellow Wesleyan alum, Lily Aldrin. Brought up in the tightly-knit community of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Marshall's inherent kindness makes him the most compassionate member of the gang. He has recently quit his job as a corporate lawyer at Goliath National Bank to pursue his dream of saving the world through environmental law. As of Challenge Accepted, Lily is found to be pregnant, and she gives birth in The Magician's Code - Part One to a boy named Marvin W. Eriksen.

Marshall first met Lily in their freshman year at Wesleyan University. They almost immediately began dating, getting engaged in the Pilot. Robin Scherbatsky
A Scotch-drinking, cigar-smoking, gun-toting Canadian pop-star-turned-journalist-turned-morning-show-host, Robin Scherbatsky befriended the gang in 2005 after an awkward date with Ted Mosby. Now, the fiercely independent woman is Lily's best friend and Ted's ex-roommate as well as an ex-girlfriend to both Ted and Barney.
Robin was born in Canada. Her father wanted a son and named her Robin Charles Scherbatsky Jr. At a young age, she cultivated her skeptic mentality when her dog, Sir Scratchewan, "miraculously" transformed into a tortoise as a result of a breakthrough medical procedure "a canine testudine cerebro xenograft". She also displayed her disdain for children, preferring to spend time alone rather than play with younger sister, Katie.
It was while living with her mother that Robin would embark on journey to become a Canadian pop sensation, going by the name Robin Sparkles. She began by starring on the kids show Space Teens alongside Jessica Glitter and Alan Thicke. Jessica Glitter has been actually Robin's BFF, until she got pregnant and quickly grew apart from her. Not long after Space Teens, Robin Sparkles would gain notoriety with Let's Go To The Mall. The song was a minor hit and Robin would spend a year touring the malls of Canada and singing the song.
Robin Scherbatsky was portrayed by Colbie Smulders.

Barney Stinson
Barney Stinson, a serial womanizer with father issues and questionable actions, first met Ted Mosby in MacLaren's Pub in 2001. Since then, he has been a big part of the gang and believes he's Ted's best friend His unique personality and elaborate techniques for seducing women are a constant source of humor, amazement, and disgust to the rest of the group. He has shown he can be very kind and loving to his friends as seen in Sandcastles in the Sand with Robin and in Sweet Taste of Liberty with Ted.
Barney's personality has been noted to be very similar to Robin's. The two see marriage/commitment as a drag; they prefer to have relationships that are casual and fun; they enjoy smoking cigars and playing laser tag (although Robin is not as avid a fan as Barney); and they are very confident in their looks, ability to lie, and others they had in common. It's these similarities, which allow the two to get along so well and both Lily and Marshall believed that this is was why they were perfect for each other as boyfriend and girlfriend.
Barney's more tender, former personality has not entirely disappeared, however. He is very loyal to his family and friends. This is shown as he acted as Ted's wingman for the entire series and helped Marshall get a job when he had financial troubles. Also, Barney comforts Robin at the end of Sandcastles in the Sand when her former boyfriend, Simon breaks up with her again. Though, he does sometimes get embarrassed when others see his kindness and will often make a rude comment to throw them off or try to keep his actions secret, as seen when he tried to stop Lily from revealing to Marshall that he went to San Francisco to convince her to return to New York and get back together with Marshall after she left him for an art fellowship.
Barney Stinson is portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris.

Lily Aldrin
Lily Aldrin is the wife of Marshall Eriksen and the best friend of Robin Scherbatsky, as well as one of Ted Mosby's closest friends, having known him and Marshall since college. She works as a kindergarten teacher and is also an amateur painter. She is virtually incapable of keeping secrets, with a few exceptions. In Challenge Accepted, Lily is found to be pregnant, and she gives birth in The Magician's Code - Part One to a boy named Marvin.
Being a kindergarten teacher, Lily has a warped sense of justice. She has a tendency to punish people that she doesn't approve in a similar fashion to how she would punish the children in her class even though they're fully grown adults. Lily is even willing to perform "punishments" that break the law, she stole a pair of pants because the store's sales clerk was rude to Robin.
One of Lily's most notable traits that the entire gang has noticed is that she loves gossip and is almost incapable of keeping a secret. She has shown to to reveal secrets within minutes after promising to keep them secret as shown when she told Ted Robin's opinion of him after their first date. The longest secret that she ever kept was her shopping addiction, which was eventually revealed to the rest of the gang in Season 3. Lily has the tendency to turn to shopping whenever she is upset whether the problem has to do with her relationships or even receiving a high credit card bill. Ted also has noticed that when she is upset she will peel the labels off water bottles. She also has the bad habit of chewing too loudly as shown in Spoiler Alert.
Lily grew up in New York City. Her childhood was shaped by the horrible environment that her parents raised her in. Lily's mother is an extreme feminist, who worked two jobs and refused to buy her an easy bake oven. She had a stay-at-home dad who was distracted by his dream of creating the next great American board game, therefore constantly neglecting Lily.
Lily Aldrin was portrayed by Alyson Hannigan.
